There’s having a business plan. And then there’s the part no one usually teaches you about.
Last week I had the privilege of joining Dr. Kristine Medyanik’s business majors for their senior capstone at Corban University.
As students presented thoughtful business plans, we unpacked the invisible layer a lot of start-ups underestimate: how regulatory exposure can strengthen or destabilize an otherwise sound business model.
It was a class of almost 50 students, which was intense. The class started at 7 p.m. and went well past 9 p.m. Which makes me even more grateful for educators like Dr. Medyanik who do this every week. I tell you what, but it’s not for the faint of heart.
I did get a chance to meet with every group, and help stress-test their theories against the actual market realities. I left feeling good, because the next generation of entrepreneurs are asking smart questions and leading with innovation.
If you were launching a company today, what policy issue would concern you most?

Discontent Over the Disconnect
/by Rick MetsgerPublic employee unions are among those demanding legislators disconnect from the tax provisions of the federal legislation when it comes to assessing state income taxes on Oregonians. Doing so will help decrease the deficit now facing legislators as they try and save key programs and services from further reductions.
